So sorry if you have already been asked this question and have answered it!
But I was just wondering about the Steam 20th anniversary art:
Who was it that decided which memes you were gonna draw and which characters were drawn in said memes?
Did you pick which memes to draw yourself? Was it a case of you found different memes that you thought would look good/be funny with certain characters and presented your argument to the person in charge?
Or did someone just come into the office with a folder filled with memes, gave it to you and asked if you could draw the memes with certain characters in mind?
We started with a loose spreadsheet that outlined the memes and pop culture events that happened in each respective year, and I pulled from that (plus any additional memes I could think of) to start roughing out a plan—I wanted to 1) make sure I had a pretty good distribution across all of the Valve properties, and 2) focus on memes that are cringe but in like a sentimental way, since we’re making a lot of pretty stale references.
I cleared out most of my PureRef board, but there are still a couple dregs of unused memes in there:
I matched up most of the characters/memes myself, and then would bug the team to fill in the blanks if there were years or properties I was stuck on. I’m never gonna know as much about CS or Dota 2 as I do about Half-Life and Portal, so I didn’t want to leave them in the dust.
Other than that I just ran them by the team to make sure they all scanned at a quick glance, but beyond that no real official approval process! Super fun just getting carte blanche with this one.
