Finally moving on to the unofficial Disney ladies with Megara! So fantastically simple to research, just put her in a simple doric chiton and spent most of my time researching fabric colours and patterns to see what I could get away with. It kinda looks like she killed Hercules and took his helmet? I’m okay with that.

Q: I just wanted to say I really love your Historical Disney Princess project. Your attention to detail is wonderful and all the pictures and outfits are stunning. Also I'm just curious for fun, if you could choose an era or culture to set a Disney princess film in, what would it be? Personally I feel like there's a whole host of untapped fairy tales in Russia and South America.

Man, how have I not responded to this yet?  Such a great question.

  • I’ve always been in love with ancient Mesoamerican and South American cultures/mythology (primarily Aztec and Inca, plus the architecture of Teotihuacán), so that’s probably at the top of my wishlist.
  • I’d also love to see specific portrayals of African cultures- none of this generic pan-African nonsense.  When I was younger I was working on a Lion King sequel (SHUT UP WE ALL DID IT) where a lion cub was orphaned and raised by a Wodaabe kid, and god knows it was cheesy, but some part of me still really wants to revisit that.  Yes I know there are like NEXT TO NO LIONS in Niger, I was clearly geographically-impaired at the time.
  • INUIT OH MY GOD SEDNA SO MANY GREAT LEGENDS
  • I’d also just love to see more modern day “princesses” or narratives along the lines of Lilo & Stitch, acknowledging that women- especially women of colour- exist outside the context of ancient/historical stories.

Also- somewhat related- I’d love to see Disney stop conflating non-western religion with magic.  The Beast’s transformation or Cindy’s sweet shoes have nothing to do with Christianity, but Grandmother Willow goes on about “listening to the spirits” in some half-hearted attempt at generic Native spirituality?  BOO-URNS.
