The BBC article’s correct, they just go from clear to slightly less clear- they have red markings that expand and contract in reaction to certain types of light, allowing them to camouflage themselves in deep water. It’s twitter, so I had to simplify things a bit. :)
The photo with the coloured boxes is just meant to show off how they look at full transparency- the squid isn’t reacting to its surroundings, just light.
