That’s fair, and it is a pretty grey area- just because I’m okay with someone’s work doesn’t mean everyone else is going to be, or should be for that matter.
Mudron’s work isn’t something I would do, personally, but I feel like riffing off of Mucha is (in illustration circles, anyway) akin to riffing off of the Mona Lisa or the Birth of Venus- the imagery is widely known enough that the parody is clear, visible, and intentional.
Tarusov, on the other hand, is using an artist who has a recognizable style, but a broad enough portfolio that you can’t pin down individual pieces if you aren’t intimately familiar with his work; this leaves people assuming he’s mimicking the style, not tracing it, and I end up with a tidal wave of asks from people telling me they had no idea he was working off of Elvgren’s source material. Most people (from what I’ve gathered) don’t see this series and think “Oh hey, post-apocalyptic Elvgren pinups!” they think “Oh hey, post-apocalyptic pinups!”
And that’s what rubs me the wrong way.

When I posted about Mudron on my blog, most people commented that they didn’t know they were traces, just that they were in Mucha’s style. They recognised the style, but not the illustrations themselves. So it’s the same as with Tarusov.
